Etsy Funds on Hold: Why Your Money Is Held and How to Get It Released
Last updated: · Platform policies and payment rules change. Verify with official sources before acting.
You made sales on Etsy, the money shows in your Payment account, and none of it is reaching your bank. The number sits under Pending, or a banner says part of it is held in a reserve.
Etsy funds on hold usually come from one of six causes, and each one is released a different way. Some clear on their own after a set number of days. One clears the moment Etsy can see your parcel moving. One will not clear until you fix something in your settings. This guide shows how to tell which one you have and what to do about it, using Etsy’s own Help Center pages.
Quick answer
- New sellers wait about 14 days. Etsy’s Help Center says new sellers’ funds are “generally” eligible for deposit 14 days after a sale, and it can take longer. Etsy’s page says 14 days; it does not say business days. Established shops can get funds as soon as the next business day.
- A Payment account reserve holds a percentage of each physical-item sale. It is released when you add tracking that Etsy can confirm is in transit, or when the default holding period ends. Digital items are not held in a reserve.
- Updating your bank details triggers a 5-day hold. It starts after Etsy verifies the new account.
- An order that is still processing is under review. Etsy says most clear within 72 hours, and you should not ship until it does.
- Some causes need you to act. An invalid or expired card on file, a missing or unverified bank account, or (where regulations apply) a request to confirm your seller info can stop deposits until you deal with it.
- A negative Current balance means nothing is deposited yet. Etsy says pending earnings cover it as they clear, before your next deposit goes out. If they cannot, Etsy says a negative total balance at the end of the month becomes a bill on the 1st.
Who this is for
Etsy sellers in the US who see money in Pending, an Order in reserve badge, or no deposit on the day they expected one. Sellers who are required to use a Payoneer Payment Account receive deposits on a different schedule; Etsy says they are paid each Monday.
First, read the three balances
Open Shop Manager > Finances > Payment account. Etsy’s Payment account page describes three balances, and the difference between them answers most “where is my money” questions.
| Balance | What it holds | Can it be deposited? |
|---|---|---|
| Current | Earnings that have cleared, minus refunds, shipping labels and fees charged when you incur them | Yes. Deposits are based on this balance |
| Pending | Earnings from recent sales still processing, funds held in reserve, and the fees tied to those earnings | Not yet |
| Total | Current and Pending together | No. Etsy does not deposit from Total |
Two details from that page explain most surprises. Fees tied to a sale wait in Pending with the sale, and the net amount moves to Current when it clears. Fees and purchases not tied to a sale, such as Etsy Ads, shipping labels, listing fees and subscriptions, come out of Current when they are charged. So a busy week of Etsy Ads and labels can push Current below zero while Pending is full.
Six reasons for Etsy funds on hold
| Reason | How you can tell | When it clears | What speeds it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| New seller waiting period | Your shop is new, and recent sales sit in Pending | Generally 14 days after each sale; can be longer depending on your shop’s standing | Nothing directly. A track record shortens it over time |
| Payment account reserve | A Payment account reserve section in your Payment account, and an Order in reserve badge on orders | When tracking shows the order in transit, or after the default holding period shown in your account | Valid tracking that Etsy can confirm |
| Security hold after a bank change | You added or updated bank details recently | 5 days after Etsy verifies the new account | Verifying the account promptly |
| Order still processing | “You have processing orders” on the Orders page; the order is not in the Completed tab | Most within 72 hours, sometimes longer | Nothing. Wait for the confirmation email |
| Negative Current balance | Current shows below zero, often after Etsy Ads, label purchases or refunds | As pending earnings and released reserve funds clear, they cover it first; the rest becomes available for deposit. If they cannot, a negative total at the end of the month becomes a bill on the 1st, charged to your card if you use autobilling | Lower ad and label spending until Current is positive |
| Something you need to fix | An expired or invalid card on file, no valid bank account or a request to verify it, or a banner asking you to confirm your seller info | After you fix it. For seller info, Etsy says it may need to hold deposits depending on whether and which regulations apply to your shop | Fixing it |
One more case is not a hold at all: the money is in Current and Ready for deposit, and your deposit day has not come yet. Etsy says new sellers are paid weekly, every Monday, by default. Under Payment settings > Deposit schedule you can choose daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly. Daily deposits need a minimum balance, which Etsy lists as USD 25.00 for US dollar accounts. If you do not want to wait, Etsy describes two options under your amount Ready for deposit: Request it now, if you are eligible, which deposits the funds the next business day; and Start a transfer for an instant transfer, a limited beta for select US sellers with a fee of 1% (minimum 25¢, maximum $1), a $25 minimum and a $500 daily limit.
Etsy also reviews accounts with unusual activity, such as a sudden increase in orders or activity that may lead to disputes or chargebacks, and may act under its Terms of Use and Payments Policy. That is a separate risk-based review, and Etsy says it will notify affected sellers when appropriate and permitted by law.
The Payment account reserve, in detail
Most “funds on hold” searches are about this one. Etsy’s Payment account reserve page explains it.

Get the free checklist →What it is. A percentage of the funds from each new sale of a physical item is held and is not available for deposit within the standard processing time. The holding time and the percentage are shown in your Payment account and “can vary based on your account.” Reserved funds are part of your Pending balance.
Why it was placed. Etsy lists risk factors “such as, but not limited to” a sudden sharp increase in orders or refunds, orders consistently missing tracking information or tracking events, orders not shipped on time, a recent increase in refunds, a first sale on Etsy, and notices of counterfeit or intellectual property infringement. Etsy Support cannot tell you the specific reason, and Support agents cannot remove a reserve.
How it is released. Funds for an order are released when you add tracking and Etsy can verify the order is in transit; if there is no tracking, when the default holding period has passed. Released funds become available at 6pm ET on the day they are released. Etsy says it cannot always confirm tracking for some carriers, and in that case the funds stay reserved for the full period.
How long the reserve itself lasts. Etsy says it regularly reviews reserves and may adjust or remove one based on your shop’s activity and account standing. For most sellers, it says, the reserve is removed within 90 days, though it may be extended if there are concerns with order fulfillment or policy violations. Star Sellers do not get a reserve placed on their shop.
What still comes out while you are in reserve. Buyer refunds, fees, shipping labels bought on Etsy and Etsy Ads keep coming out of your Current balance. If Current goes negative, released reserve funds cover it first. If Current and Pending together still cannot cover a charge, Etsy charges the card on file for the difference.
See which orders are held, and until when
- Orders page: an Order in reserve badge appears next to orders with funds in reserve.
- Monthly statement CSV: in Finances > Monthly statements, generate the CSV for the month. The Status column shows whether a sale is in the reserve, and the Availability Date column gives an estimated date its reserved funds become available.
Forvendo decision rule: what to do this week
| If you see | Do this | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| An Order in reserve badge on orders you have shipped | Add the tracking number to each order now | Wait for the holding period on orders you could have tracked |
| Reserved orders shipped with a carrier Etsy does not confirm | For the next orders, use labels bought on Etsy. They are available to sellers in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, and Etsy’s tracking page says tracking is included automatically when you buy a label on Etsy. The reserve page is more careful, saying these labels may include tracking, so check that each label shows a tracking number | Mark items as shipped before you drop them off. Etsy lists that as something to avoid |
| Orders that say processing | Leave them. Ship after the confirmation email | Ship early. Etsy says if a processing order fails after you ship, you may not be paid |
| A negative Current balance | Check last week’s Etsy Ads and label spending against cleared sales | Assume a full Pending balance will be deposited |
| A banner to confirm seller info, or a card on file that expired | Fix it first; deposits to your bank can stay stopped until you do | Contact Support before fixing it |
| A new shop with sales in Pending | Plan cash for about 14 days from each sale, possibly longer | Spend money you expect from this week’s sales on next week’s materials |
Quick ROI test for Etsy labels while in reserve. Take the reserved amount on orders you could not get confirmed tracking for, and the number of days it stayed held past shipment. If that money sitting idle cost you more, in delayed restocks or a card balance, than the price difference between your usual labels and labels with tracking Etsy can confirm, switch while the reserve lasts. If the amounts are small, it may not be worth changing carriers.

Join the newsletter →Do not do this yet: do not cut processing times to look faster while you are in a reserve. Worked example
A composite example, not a real shop. A seller of handmade candles in Ohio gets a run of orders after a gift guide feature. The Payment account now shows a reserve, and the percentage and holding time are displayed there.
- Day 1: 40 orders, all physical. A share of each sale goes into the reserve. The Current balance looks small even though the Total looks healthy.
- Day 3: the seller ships 30 orders with labels bought on Etsy and 10 with a regional courier, and enters tracking for all 40.
- Day 4: the 30 orders with Etsy labels show as in transit. Their reserved funds are released and become available at 6pm ET that day.
- The 10 courier orders: Etsy cannot confirm that courier’s tracking, so those funds stay in the reserve for the full holding period shown in the account.
- Meanwhile: the seller’s Etsy Ads spend and label purchases come out of Current every day, so on day 2 Current dips below zero. Released reserve funds on day 4 cover that first.
The lesson the seller takes: for as long as the reserve lasts, ship everything with tracking Etsy can confirm, and keep ad spend at a level today’s cleared money can cover.
Copy-paste: estimate how much cash is held
Use your own numbers from the Payment account. The percentage and holding days are the ones Etsy shows for your shop.
Physical-item sales per day: $____
Reserve percentage (from Etsy): ____ %
Days until release: ____
(days to confirmed in-transit tracking, or the full
holding period if Etsy cannot confirm your carrier)
Cash held at any time = daily sales x percentage x days
Example: $300/day x 50% x 3 days = $450 held
$300/day x 50% x 21 days = $3,150 held
The two example lines are illustrations, not Etsy’s numbers. The gap between them is the cash that confirmed tracking can free up. Check the result against the Pending balance in your Payment account.
Weekly money check for Etsy sellers
- Current balance: positive? If not, look at Etsy Ads, labels and refunds since the last deposit.
- Orders page: any Order in reserve badges on orders without tracking? Add it.
- Monthly statement CSV: read the Availability Date column for the next week’s releases.
- Settings: card on file valid, bank account verified, no banner asking you to confirm seller info.
- Deposit schedule: matches how often you need cash. If you are on daily, check that your balance meets the daily minimum.
When the deposit was sent but is not in your bank
If your Payment account lists the deposit and Etsy has emailed you that it was sent, the money has left Etsy. Etsy’s deposit page says standard transfers may take up to 1–5 business days to appear, and its missing deposit page says up to 3–5 business days, so allow the full five before acting. The deposit may show on your bank statement under a payment processor’s name, such as WorldPay, Envoy, Stichting Custodian or Adyen, rather than Etsy. After that, the missing deposit page says to start with your bank; if the bank cannot resolve it after 90 days, contact Etsy Support, which needs a signed letter from your bank to investigate.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Etsy funds on hold?
Usually one of six reasons: you are a new seller waiting about 14 days after each sale, a Payment account reserve is holding a percentage of physical-item sales, you recently changed bank details and a 5-day hold applies, an order is still being reviewed, your Current balance is negative and pending earnings are covering it first, or something needs fixing, such as an invalid card on file, a missing or unverified bank account, or a request to confirm your seller info.
How long does Etsy hold funds for new sellers?
Etsy says new sellers’ funds are generally eligible for deposit 14 days after a sale, and it may take longer depending on the shop’s standing. Established shops can have funds available as soon as the next business day.
How do I get Etsy to release my reserve?
Add valid tracking to each order. If Etsy can confirm the order is in transit, the reserved funds for that order are released and become available at 6pm ET that day. Without confirmed tracking, the funds stay held for the default period shown in your Payment account.
Can Etsy Support remove a payment account reserve?
No. Etsy says Support agents cannot remove a reserve and cannot give you the specific reason it was placed. Etsy reviews reserves regularly and says most are removed within 90 days, though it can extend one if there are fulfillment or policy concerns.
Are digital downloads held in an Etsy reserve?
No. Etsy says sales of digital items are not held in reserve. A reserve applies to new sales of physical items.
What is the difference between Current and Pending on Etsy?
Current is the amount eligible for deposit now: cleared earnings minus refunds, labels and fees. Pending is not yet eligible: recent sales still processing, funds in reserve, and their fees. Etsy deposits from Current, not from the Total of the two.
