Three details that make hand calculations wrong
- The transaction fee includes shipping. Etsy charges 6.5% of the total order amount, so raising your shipping charge to protect margin raises the fee with it. A $24 item with $6 shipping is charged 6.5% of $30, not of $24.
- Payment processing is on top, not instead. The 3% plus $0.25 is charged in addition to the 6.5% transaction fee. Sellers who model only one of the two are short by roughly a third of their total fees.
- The listing fee repeats with quantity. A listing with quantity available renews automatically as units sell, and each renewal is another $0.20. Two units from one listing is $0.40, not $0.20.
Offsite Ads is the input worth getting right
Offsite Ads is charged only on orders that came through an ad Etsy placed for you, and at one of two rates. Sellers who made under $10,000 on Etsy in the past 365 days pay 15%; at $10,000 or more the rate drops to 12%. The window is rolling, not a calendar year.
At 15% on the order total, an Offsite Ads sale carries roughly a quarter of its value in fees once the other three are added. That is not automatically a bad trade — it is a customer acquisition cost, and it may still beat what you would pay to acquire the same buyer elsewhere. What it is not is a rounding error, and a store whose margin was set without it can be selling below cost on those orders specifically.
What the calculator does not cover
- Currency conversion. Applies when your listing currency differs from your payment account currency.
- Regulatory operating fees. Charged in some countries on top of the rates above.
- Etsy Ads (on-site). A separate daily budget, not a per-order percentage.
- Subscription and shipping label costs. Etsy Plus and label purchases are billed separately from order fees.
The processing rate is also set by the country of your bank account rather than where your buyer is. The 3% plus $0.25 in this calculator is the United States rate.

Common causes are sales tax and shipping label purchases deducted from the same balance, a currency conversion, or an Offsite Ads fee on an order you had not flagged as one. Your Payment account activity page itemizes each deduction against the order.
