Why this Shopify fee calculator asks for your processing rate
Most fee calculators on the web hardcode a card rate, usually 2.9% plus 30 cents. Shopify does not publish a public rate table. The Help Center page on card rates explains where to find yours rather than listing a number, and points you at the Shopify Payments section of your admin.
There is a reason for that: a single rate does not exist. The rate you pay moves with several things at once.
- Card type. Standard consumer Visa, Mastercard and Discover are priced differently from premium cards, which include corporate cards and American Express.
- Channel. In-person point-of-sale rates are lower than online rates.
- Manual entry. Keying a card in by hand costs more than a customer entering it at checkout.
- Issuing country. Cards issued outside the US carry an additional charge.
So the calculator takes your rate as an input. Read it once from Settings, then Payments in your admin, and the output is your number rather than an industry average.

The third-party gateway fee is the one that surprises people
If you process payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a transaction fee on top of whatever that provider charges you. On Basic that is 2% of the order, which on $20,000 of monthly sales is $400 — sixteen times the Basic subscription itself.
The decision this creates is usually not “which gateway has the lowest rate” but “is the reason I left Shopify Payments worth 2% of revenue”. Set the calculator to your real volume with the gateway selector on and off, and the gap between the two figures is the annual price of that reason.
What the output does not include
- App subscriptions. Frequently larger than the plan fee itself for a store with a mature stack.
- Chargeback and dispute fees. Charged per event, not per order.
- Currency conversion. Applied when you sell in a currency you do not pay out in.
- Shipping labels, taxes, and cost of goods. Real costs, but not Shopify fees. For the per-order picture that includes them, use the profit margin calculator.

How much does Shopify take per sale?
On Shopify Payments, the payment processing rate that applies to your account, which you can read in Settings, then Payments. If you use an outside gateway, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, or 0.6% on Advanced, and your gateway charges its own rate on top of that.
What is the Shopify transaction fee?
It is the percentage Shopify charges on orders processed through a payment provider other than Shopify Payments. It is separate from the processing rate, and it disappears when you use Shopify Payments.
Is the yearly plan worth it?
Yearly billing runs about 25% below monthly across all three plans. The trade-off is committing a year of subscription up front, which for a store still testing whether it stays on Shopify may be worth less than the discount.
Why does this calculator not fill in 2.9% plus 30 cents for me?
Because Shopify does not publish that figure and does not guarantee it. The rate varies by card type, sales channel and issuing country, so a hardcoded rate produces a confident number that can be wrong. Yours is in your admin.
Are my numbers saved anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your inputs stay on your device and are remembered locally only so the figures are still there next visit.
