This eBay fee calculator applies eBay’s published US fee schedule to one order: the final value fee for the category, the per-order fee, and the extras that change it — seller performance, Promoted Listings, the international fee and the insertion fee. It reproduces both of eBay’s own worked examples to the cent. Runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

How the eBay fee calculator works out the final value fee
eBay charges the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, not on the item price. In eBay’s definition that total is the item price, handling, the shipping the buyer paid, sales tax, and any other applicable fees. It is calculated per item, and a per-order fee is added on top: $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less, $0.40 when it is over $10.00.
If you offer one-day or international shipping alongside a cheaper domestic option, enter the cheaper option’s cost in the shipping field, since that is what eBay charges the fee on.
| Category | Final value fee | How the rate applies |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories | 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% | Tiered: only the part above $7,500 gets the lower rate |
| Books & Magazines, Movies & TV, Music (except vinyl records) | 15.3% up to $7,500, then 2.35% | Tiered |
| Coins & Paper Money (except Bullion) | 13.25% up to $7,500, then 2.35% | Tiered |
| Trading cards, collectible card games, comic books | 13.25% up to $7,500, then 2.35% | Tiered |
| Watches, Parts & Accessories | 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% to $7,500, then 3% | Tiered, three bands |
| Guitars & Basses | 6.7% up to $7,500, then 2.35% | Tiered |
| Women’s Bags & Handbags | 15% at $2,000 or less, 9% over $2,000 | The whole amount switches rate |
| Jewelry (except watches) | 15% at $5,000 or less, 9% over $5,000 | The whole amount switches rate |
| Bullion | 13.6% at $7,500 or less, 7% over $7,500 | The whole amount switches rate |
| Men’s and women’s athletic shoes | 8% at $150 or more, with no per-order fee; standard rate under $150 | The whole amount switches rate |

Checked against eBay’s own examples
eBay’s fee page works through two sales. The calculator returns the same figures:
- A $400 item with free shipping and 6% sales tax. The total amount of the sale is $424. Final value fee: 13.6% of $424 plus $0.40 = $58.06. With a $0.35 insertion fee after the month’s free listings, fees are $58.41 and the seller keeps $341.59.
- A $9,500 trading card with 6% sales tax. The total is $10,070. 13.25% of the first $7,500 is $993.75, 2.35% of the remaining $2,570 is $60.40, plus $0.40 = $1,054.55.
Note that eBay’s quoted final value fee already includes the per-order fee. The calculator reports it the same way, so the number matches the line on your eBay invoice.
Four details that make hand calculations wrong
- The fee is charged on sales tax that goes to the state. eBay collects the buyer’s sales tax and passes it on, but the tax is still inside the fee base. A $100 item with no shipping costs $14.00 in fees at 0% tax and $15.09 at 8% tax. The extra $1.09 is 13.6% of tax money that went to the state.
- Shipping is in the fee base too. Raising your shipping charge raises the fee with it. One exception: if a listing offers one-day or international shipping alongside a cheaper or free domestic option, eBay charges the fee on the cheapest domestic option, not on the faster service the buyer picked. Whether shipping is taxed depends on the buyer’s state. Set the “Does the buyer’s state tax shipping?” field to match. A smaller fee base usually means a slightly lower fee, but near the $150, $2,000, $5,000 or $7,500 line it can drop the sale below the line and raise the fee.
- Some categories switch the whole rate at a line. In most categories only the amount above $7,500 gets the lower rate. Handbags, jewelry, bullion and athletic shoes work differently: cross the line and the entire sale moves to the other rate. The line is tested against the total amount of the sale, shipping and sales tax included, not against your list price. With free shipping and no sales tax, a $2,000 handbag pays $300.40 in fees and a $2,001 handbag pays $180.49. Sold to a buyer paying 7% sales tax, the same $2,000 handbag totals $2,140, crosses the line, and pays $193.00.
- At the athletic shoe line, the dearer pair pays less in fees. With free shipping and no sales tax, a $149 pair pays 13.6% plus $0.40, or $20.66, and a $150 pair pays a flat 8% with no per-order fee, or $12.00. The seller keeps $138.00 on the dearer pair against $128.34 on the cheaper one. Add 7% sales tax and the $149 pair totals $159.43, which is already over the line: it pays $12.75.
The extras that move the total
On a $40 item with $6 shipping and 7% sales tax on both, the base fee is $7.09 and the seller keeps $38.91. Each extra below is a percentage of the same $49.22 total, not of the item price:
| Extra | Rate | On the $40 example | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promoted Listings General | Your ad rate, 2% to 100% | +$2.46 at 5% | The item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad |
| Below Standard seller level | +6%, or +7% after four months in a row | +$2.95 at 6% | Set by eBay’s evaluation on the 20th; applies to the next month’s sales |
| Very high “not as described” return rate | +5%, or +6% after four months | +$2.46 at 5% | Only in the category flagged; not charged on top of Below Standard |
| International fee | 1.65% | +$0.81 | The delivery address or the buyer’s registered address is outside the US, and the listing does not use eBay International Shipping |
| Insertion fee | $0.35 per listing | +$0.35 | After the month’s 250 free listings; charged per listing, and again for a second category. Guitars & Basses listings are free |
Promoted Listings is the only extra on this list that you set yourself. eBay’s general campaign help page confirms the ad rate is multiplied by the total sale amount, shipping and taxes included.
A decision rule for pricing near a line
If the total a buyer pays — price, shipping and sales tax — can land within about 10% of $150 (athletic shoes), $2,000 (handbags), $5,000 (jewelry) or $7,500 (bullion), run the calculator twice before you list: once at 0% sales tax and once at a typical rate for your buyers. Sales tax differs by the buyer’s location, so one listing can fall on different sides of the line for different buyers, and the same item can carry a different fee from one sale to the next. A $140 pair of athletic shoes at 7% tax totals $149.80 and pays $20.77; a $141 pair totals $150.87 and pays $12.07. In these four categories a small price change can raise what you keep. Everywhere else the rate is tiered, the line does not matter, and there is nothing to optimize.
Forvendo’s rule of thumb for ads: if a Promoted Listings rate, plus any Below Standard surcharge, takes total fees past about 25% of what you charge, check the product cost and margin before you raise the ad rate further.
What the calculator does not cover
- eBay Store subscriptions. Store subscribers pay different final value fees in most categories, and the thresholds differ too. See eBay’s Store selling fees page.
- Listing upgrades. Bold, subtitle, Gallery Plus and similar options are charged per listing.
- Currency conversion. For US-registered sellers, eBay’s conversion charge is 3%, rising to 3.25% from October 14, 2026, when it converts funds for a listing or sale on another eBay site.
- Disputes. A $20 fee applies when eBay finds you responsible for a payment dispute.
- Your postage. “You keep” is before the label you buy and your product cost. Enter the product cost to see profit, or use the eBay Profit Calculator to add the label and packaging and find the price for a target margin.

Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take per sale?
In most categories, 13.6% of the total amount of the sale plus $0.40 per order (or $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less). On a $40 item with $6 shipping and 7% sales tax on both, that is $7.09, or about 15% of the $46 you charged, because the fee is also charged on the shipping and the tax.
Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?
Yes. eBay’s total amount of the sale includes sales tax, and the final value fee is a percentage of that total. On a $100 item, 8% sales tax adds $1.09 to the fee.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes, on the shipping the buyer pays. If you offer one-day or international shipping together with a cheaper or free domestic option, eBay calculates the fee on the cheapest domestic option.
Why are my eBay fees higher than 13.6%?
Usually because of sales tax and shipping in the fee base, the per-order fee, a Promoted Listings ad fee, a Below Standard surcharge, or the 1.65% international fee. Each is a separate line in the calculator result.
Do eBay Store subscribers pay these rates?
No. This calculator uses the rates for sellers without a Store. Store subscribers pay different final value fees in most categories; eBay lists them on its Store selling fees page.
Are my numbers saved anywhere?
Nothing is sent anywhere. The number fields are remembered in this browser only, so the figures are still there next visit.
